It’s been a whole year since we first opened up the Shop! Over the last 365(-ish) days, we’ve released hundreds of decorations and effects for your profile themed around Anime, Fantasy, Pirates, and even some based on beloved games such as VALORANT and Palworld.
Some of these collections come and go, and over the last year, many of you have been asking us “hey Discord, when’s this avatar decoration coming back?,” or saying “oh man, I missed that sick profile effect!” Some of you even said, “WOW STINKUMS IS SO COOL I WANT HIM.” (I’m sure someone said this, at least.)
Have you heard, traveler? Today, the Vault's distant, ancient rumblings have been heard in the Shop for the first time in history.
When the Vault decides to open up is a mystery, but when it does, it's because it allows itself to be discovered. We set off on an adventure to explore what ancient trinkets and treasures may lie inside and have returned with news to share about what we’ve discovered in the depths of the Vault.
The items we discovered inside the Vault this time around appear to be returning items of some of the most popular and requested Avatar Decorations & Profile Decorations that many of you seem to know and love from this past year. We’ve brought our discoveries to the Shop, so grab any items from the Vault that you may have missed and discover new variants of your old favorites!
The Vault will be open until September 30, 2024, when it will return to the foreboding mist, hidden in secrecy until it deems the time right once again.
What’s been released from the Vault? Read on to see!
The most important meal of the day? Breakfast. The most important profile on the server? Yours.
Bread: it’s a key part of many people’s daily breakfast. Somehow, dogs, cats, lizards, and other creatures all manage to get their faces stuck in bread. And based on what everyone buys in the Shop, you all like to get your heads stuck too — Toast was the most popular item from our Breakfast collection!
Or maybe you don’t particularly try to get your head stuck, and it just sorta happens. We get it.
In addition to the Toast shown above, the Fried Egg and Morning Coffee Decorations, along with the Discord-Os Profile Effect, will be joining them to round out a well-balanced breakfast.
New to the Breakfast collection is not one, but TWO bundles. They include either Toast + Discord-Os or the new Burnt Toast + Chocolate Discord-Os! Chocolate milk is delicious at any age and I will not accept any arguments suggesting otherwise.
Knight to D-scord!
Normally in these intros, we’d say things like “chess is loved by people of all ages” and so on, but you probably already know that by now. Your parents, guardians, grandparents, and even Mabel down the street might’ve said the same thing at some point.
Chess has been around for over a thousand years (yes, really!), and it’s just as popular as it’s ever been. (Heck, you can even play the “Chess in the Park” Activity on Discord!) And with Chess.com available in any web browser or on your smartphone, it’s also the most accessible it’s ever been.
That’s why we’re teaming up with our friends at Chess.com to celebrate the love of the game in our own Discord-y way: log into your Chess.com account and play chess against Discord characters for a chance to win a month of Discord Nitro for yourself or to give to a friend!
Plus, existing Nitro members can claim a month of Chess.com’s Diamond membership and learn how to improve their chess skills.
Read on to see both sides of our chess celebration: playing chess against Discord characters and how Nitro members can up their chess prowess.
During September, players of all skill levels will be able to challenge four Discord characters to a rousing round of chess. We’ve brought our smartest machines (and Wumpus) for you to challenge. The prize? The most coveted Discord reward you could imagine: some Nitro!!!!
At the start of the month, you can get some practice matches in with Nelly, Wumpus, and Clyde. Wumpus has recently taken an interest in chess, while Nelly and Clyde are a bit more advanced players since, you know… they’re robots.
And in the midsts of September, a new challenger will approach that you’ll have the chance to play against… someone who looks strikingly similar to Wumpus, except they’re really, really, really smart — a chess professor, if you will.
The first time you beat or draw any of the Discord characters during September, you’ll receive a coveted prize: a one-month trial of Discord Nitro, usable for anyone who is not currently a Nitro member!
Redeem it to start streaming your Chess.com matches to your friends in up to 4K quality, deck out your profile with your animated icons and profile banners, and tons more.
How can you play against them? Easy: press the big ol’ button below to get started:

Here are the Discord updates from August 28, 2024. You can also find the most recent updates in the Discord app under Settings > What's New.
Turn the volume up and listen in: Amazon Music Unlimited customers can hop into the new “Amazon Music Listening Party” Activity in voice calls or text chats and listen along to their favorite music or podcasts with their friends!
Never tried Amazon Music before? Qualifying users can launch the Activity to redeem a three-month trial to try it out. Tune in to our blog to see how it all works. Available in select markets. Terms apply.
Along with the new Amazon Music Activity, we’ve got plenty more to share this month, includinggg:
Our Engineering Team’s latest Patch Notes includes fixes such as the mobile app now sending you a notification if something you tried to send didn’t actually send (oops). See the latest they’ve shared here.
A few games here, a glowing recommendation there… and suddenly, we’ve all been playing games and talking about them for SIX months! We laughed, we screamed, we carried our teams, and now we’re back with even more games to talk about. This month, the usuals Alex, Emi, and Cody are here, along with… someone new?!? Jeremy is here for the first time to talk about what they’ve been playing A new player means an entirely new set of recommendations from a fresh perspective! Read on to see what everyone’s been playing lately and their favorite game of 2024 so far!
I’ve had to play way too much Final Fantasy XIV this and last month, specifically the newest expansion Dawntrail. I was dragging my feet on playing through the main story quests when it first came out in early July, but the newest Savage tier raids came out on July 30th (shoutouts to my raid static) so I had to get through 40 hours of content in a week.
Last month I also went to EVO, so I was inspired to make an attempt at fighting games again and dabbled a bit in the 2XKO alpha, Street Fighter 6, and Guilty Gear Strive.
Another thing I made a return to (I guess Late July - August was the month of returning to games) is Fire Emblem Heroes on mobile. I wouldn’t say I play mobile games that much nor am I a super disciplined daily gacha player, but I pop in every now and then for events or character releases. They just dropped their yearly “vote in your favorite character” release and I had to log back in to pull for Felix from Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
I also want to give a special shoutout to LinkedIn Games. If you didn’t know, LinkedIn offers NYT-esque short daily puzzle games now. They’ve actually been really great for me to play before bed or before I start my workday for a little relaxation and focus. The funniest part is the social aspect of the games, where you can see which company has the aggregate highest scores for the day.
I picked up Final Fantasy VII Rebirth again to maybe platinum trophy it after I saw the orchestra world tour in LA. So, I’ve been spending a lot of time at the Golden Saucer. Can I choose the mini-games within Rebirth as my favorite of 2024?
But actually, I think the best overall game I’ve played in 2024 has been the Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door HD Remake. I think it’s pretty well-known among the RPG Mario fans that The Thousand-Year Door is a fan favorite and objectively “the best” Paper Mario, so it’s not that surprising how enjoyable the game was. But I want to call out how good of a remake it was. They completely reorchestrated the soundtrack (though you can still switch to the original GameCube version by equipping a special badge), colors have been “vibrantized,” and they even added little custom soundbites for when the characters are “speaking” (the bob-ombs sound like bob-ombs, koopas sound like koopas, etc.) It’s just a lightweight but delightful play from start to finish, and I’d highly recommend it for both veteran RPG players and people who usually don’t play the genre.
Turn the volume up and listen in: Starting today, Amazon Music Unlimited customers can hop into the new “Amazon Music Listening Party” Activity in voice calls or text chats, letting them listen to millions of songs and plenty more podcasts together directly on Discord.
Plus, your music library is synced between the Activity on Discord and the official Amazon Music apps on desktop, web, and mobile. Play your favorites while on the call, and after, if you come across your next musical brainworm while you’re away, save it to your library to easily share with your friends the next time you’re in a call on Discord together.
We’ve heard from many of you that you want more ways to enjoy musical experiences directly on Discord, whether it’s while talkin’ the night away, doing some studying here and there, or whatever it is y’all do. We’re SUPER stoked to bring you the power to vibe with Amazon Music in Discord voice calls or text chats with your buddies.
If you haven’t tried Amazon Music Unlimited before, Amazon’s got ya covered: qualifying users can redeem a three-month free trial of Amazon Music Unlimited, letting you experience everything both the Activity and Amazon Music itself have to offer. Open the Amazon Music Activity on Discord to learn more.
Read on to see today’s setlist: how the new co-listening Discord Activity works, and how you can try Amazon Music Unlimited for yourself by scoring a free three-month trial!
To listen together in the new Amazon Music Listening Party Activity, each participant will need their own Amazon Music Unlimited subscription, the subscription tier that lets you pick the exact song or podcast you want to listen to.
Not a member of the “Unlimited” tier? Scroll on over here to learn how to score a 3-month trial of Amazon Music Unlimited so you can vibe with your friends!
To get started, hop into any voice channel, text channel, or DM conversation. You can use the new Activity anywhere you can talk on Discord!
In the Activities list, you’ll see an option called “Amazon Music Listening Party.” You can probably figure out the rest: select “Amazon Music” from the list of Activities, link your Amazon Music account to Discord, and get to listening!
On the top of the Activity, you’ll see some very important tabs:
The left side of the app? That’s the queue, where you can see what’s next and who added it. Everyone can add their favorite tunes to the queue, then you can (lovingly) sneak in an episode of that podcast you’re obsessed with while you’ve got ‘em in a group.
Your saved music and playlists in the Activity will sync to your Amazon Music account, letting you bring your VC’s favorite playlist with you wherever you go! Or, if you find a great album or podcast you wanna share with your friends while using the Amazon Music app on web or mobile, save it to your Library and you’ll find it the next time you start the Activity on Discord.

Discord is home to millions around the world who talk to their heart’s content while playing their favorite games. And Xbox is home to many playing their favorite games. And whaddaya know… Discord and Xbox connect with each other and let you talk to your Discord friends while playing your favorite console games! It’s the perfect match if you ask us.
Today, we’re sharing a few new ways we’re making your Discord experience on an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One console even better, including new ways to see what your Discord friends are up to on Xbox and the power to watch your friends' streams on Discord, directly from your Xbox.
Read on to see how Discord soon will feel more and more like a natural part of your Xbox console!
Never miss a moment. The Xbox Friends list will now include Discord friends who are gaming or chatting in Discord Voice under "Happening now", alongside Xbox friends in parties or games. Jump into a voice channel, watch a friend streaming, or initiate a call, all from your Xbox console.
Plus, if your friends are currently talkin’ away or streaming their game in a Discord server’s voice channel, that channel will also be shown in the “Happening Now” tab to the right of your friends list.
And one more thing… You can now call your Discord friends directly from your Xbox. What are smartphones even for, anyways?
Now there’s no need to scour all your servers and DMs on your itty-bitty phone screen to see what’s happening — just hop into any active voice channel or call a Discord friend directly from your Xbox! There’s no excuse not to start an impromptu Halo Infinite session now.
Yeah, well, WE DO TOO! In fact, we play them so often that we even talk about them on this here blog! In case been a while or you’re new to this series, Staff Picks is where a couple of Discord employees come together to summarize what they’ve been playing over the last month.
This month, we’ve got Emi, Cody, Matt, and Mark chattin’ about what games they’ve been playing and what games they like to screen share with their friends on Discord. See which Staff members vibe with your play style, or discover something new to check out and play with your group of Discord buddies!
🥁🥁🥁🥁 dudududududu… 🥁🥁🥁🥁 Without further ado, let’s start with Emi!
In July I’ve found myself once again wishing to be the very best, like no one ever was. And by that, I mean I’ve been spending quite a few hours playing Pokémon Snap. I don’t turn on my N64 too often, although I’d definitely like to use it more, but I’ve been trying to play it more this month. The weather has been pretty nice recently though, which means I’ve been out of the house more, which also means I had time to play New Pokémon Snap and throw apples to even more Pokémon. Basically, I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect pictures.
I also just started playing Dead by Daylight and have really enjoyed it so far! I’ve played and enjoyed other horror games, like Phasmophobia, and the suspense is so much fun. I’m honestly terrible at the skill checks though, so I think I need more hours in the game to get those down. Luckily, I have some friends that can give me tips and help me with the perks.
If people are gathering around to watch my stream, the goal is usually just to spend time together! We sometimes play games that have interactive audiences, like The Jackbox Party Pack, but we also have people come by just to have something to watch while they chat and hang out. I usually end up streaming whatever I’m playing on most game nights just so folks that drop by can laugh (or suffer defeat) along with us.
The 2024 VALORANT Champions Tour is fast approaching — the best players from over 70 invitationals and open brackets around the world will come together to compete in front of a global audience to become World Champions.
It’s one of the biggest esports events of the year, involving one of the most-played games on Discord, so naturally, we had to celebrate it. And thanks to our buddies at Riot, we have not just one, but TWO ways to gather your squad and go BIG for VALORANT as the Champions Tour closes in!
First: we’re helping welcome new VALORANT players around the world by offering a Discord Quest! Find your squad and play 15 minutes of VALORANT on a linked console or PC and score a Wingman-themed Avatar Decoration to wear for two months.
And second: we’re sharing an early sneak peek of an upcoming expansion of VALORANT Avatar Decorations and Profile Effects in the Shop that’s dropping next month.
Peek the article below to see what we’ve got planned!
Did’ya hear? VALORANT is coming to Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, with cross-play support between both platforms. And lucky you: Discord voice chat is ALSO on Xbox and PS5!
Find your squad on either console platform and easily talk with your friends using Discord while you put your opposing team down a peg or two. Plus, all your Discord buddies PC and mobile can talk alongside your team and cheer you towards victory.
And if you somehow need more encouragement to play some VALORANT with your friends, we’ve teamed up with Riot to offer a special Quest for VALORANT players: Accept the Quest, play VALORANT on a supported console or on PC for 15 minutes, and score an exclusive Wingman Avatar Decoration to use for two months.
Yep, that’s it: just play the game for 15 minutes and score an Avatar Decoration. That’s like, one VALORANT match at most. Think you can handle playing a match or two with your squad? We knew you could.
You’ll be able to complete the VALORANT on Console Quest by heading over to User Settings > Gift Inventory, or clicking here. Plus, you can complete the Quest even if your squad plays on PC! It’s available until August 6, 2024.
Need backup? Take a peek at our Quests support article here.

Disability Pride Month is a time to celebrate the achievements, culture, and contributions of people with disabilities. Every July, we take this opportunity to collectively promote visibility, raise awareness about the challenges and triumphs of the disabled community, and advocate for the dignity, respect, and inclusion for all.
This year’s celebration coincides with the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which was signed into law on July 26, 1990. This landmark legislation has been instrumental in ensuring the civil rights of disabled individuals, aiming to prohibit the discrimination of those with disabilities and help promote accessibility in all areas of public life.
This month is not just about acknowledging progress. While its origins are from a piece of US legislation, it’s now a worldwide initiative about affirming the pride and identity of individuals with disabilities. We shine a light on the social, economic, and cultural disparities that still exist for the disabled community — simply put, it's about re-branding the word "disability.”
Discord’s Brain & Body Works Employee Resource Group (previously known as the DisAbilities ERG) is committed to building belonging for all kinds of bodies and minds. Disability Pride Month encourages us to see disability as a natural part of human diversity, and the Brain & Body Works ERG was created to build intentional safe spaces for people, regardless of ability status, and to advocate for the needs of physically disabled folks and neurodivergent individuals.
In honor of Disability Pride month, Discord and the Brain & Body Works ERG will be donating to three important organizations that support, advocate for, and help to create a more inclusive and equitable world for disabled communities globally: Canine Companions, Able Gamers, and the National Institute of Mental Health and Technology.
We built Discord with accessibility in mind, making sure anyone can easily talk with their friends and communities, no matter the “how.” See some of our work at discord.com/accessibility.

To celebrate SpongeBob’s 25th anniversary, we’re releasing a SpongeBob SquarePants collection of Avatar Decorations and Profile Effects in the Shop, available from July 18th to August 15th, featuring items designed after and inspired by SpongeBob, Gary, Sandy Cheeks, Patrick, Squidward, Plankton, and even DoodleBob!

You played, you voted, and you probably played a bunch more after voting… we have some exciting news about this year’s Discord App Pitches!
We trimmed it down to the category winners in this article, tallied up your votes, and brought our judges together for one final decision: deciding which team becomes the Grand Prize Winner of up to $30,000!
Drumroll please... 🥁 🥁 🥁 🥁 🥁 🥁 🥁 🥁 🥁
...
IT’S SOULBOUND!
Read up on the winning team’s submission by hopping to their section here! Congrats to the Webb Technology LTD team! We can’t wait to see how Soulbound and the rest of the category winners take shape as they further develop their Activities. <3
The creativity doesn’t end here though! If you’re looking to bring your own Activity to Discord, consider building it today! Coming soon, any developer will be able to release their game or Activity on Discord and opt-in to easy user discovery, giving friends even more ways to have fun with their favorite people.
Soulbound stole the hearts of our judges and users in Discord Town Hall. Throughout the two-week voting period, Soulbound consistently held over 50% of the votes and saw the most repeat usage among any category winner in the server. Our Judges are very excited about the potential of an MMO Activity on Discord and look forward to working with the Soulbound team as they add more social elements for players to enjoy with their friends.
We hope you had fun trying out the category winners in our Town Hall server. For now, you can play the Activities listed here (and more!) in any place you can talk on Discord: in a server’s voice and text channels, and DM calls with your friends.
Continue reading for the original article containing the finalists, including our Grand Prize Winner!
Game, Set, MATCH! Your Discord App Pitches category winners for 2024 are here!
For this year’s Discord App Pitches, we asked the developer community to pitch their Activity prototypes. You know, those games and apps that can be enjoyed anywhere you talk on Discord, whether in the middle of the late-night call or a server’s text channel.
We received thousands of entries for potential Activities on Discord this year, which is incredibly impressive with this year's competition requiring entrants to submit a playable prototype. Out of all the entries, five made it to the top.
The following five Category Winners are eligible to receive up to $15,000 USD, as described in the terms and conditions.
Next up: YOU get to try ‘em all out and cast your vote to help decide who becomes the overall Grand Prize winner of up to $30,000!
The voting window is from June 27 to July 11, taking place in the Discord Town Hall server. Bring your friends, hop into a voice channel, and try out these five games! Once you’ve played all five, go vote for your favorite in the #discord-app-pitches-voting channel.
If you want to show your friends what’s available to play in the Discord Town Hall server, check out the category winners below! With games fitting all types of genre players, you’ll be sure to find an Activity to enjoy from the list below.
Our winner of the “Compete” category is Exoracer, a “skill-based, multiplayer platformer/racing game hybrid” where you and your Discord friends can compete to see who can get the fastest time on a level within two minutes.
Think of it as “Geometry Dash meets Trackmania,” says Nyan Studio Games, the game’s dev team. "It comes with a super powerful level editor so you can make and share your own levels. It also has a visual scripting language to add custom logic to your levels.”
It’s got simple one-button controls and its levels can be run through pretty quickly, letting you spend the rest of two minutes replaying the level while you wait and fine-tuning your path. Whoever in your lobby gets the best track time within two minutes wins!
If time trials or speedrunning is your jam, you’ll wanna check this one out during the voting period in the Discord Town Hall server.
At Discord, we take pride in making data-driven decisions to deliver a great experience for users around the world. As our platform and user base have grown over the years, so have the demands on our data orchestration system.
Until recently, we’ve been using Derived, an in-house orchestration system that’s provided the foundation for Discord’s data analytics over the last five years. As our data organization grew, it became apparent that both self-service and top-notch observability would be key for our ability to effectively scale as a team.
To continue delivering seamless service and insightful data analytics, we embraced an ambitious project: to overhaul our data orchestration infrastructure using modern, open-source tools.
Keep reading to learn about how we embarked on this journey, the candid lessons we learned along the way, and how our new system is powering over 2000 dbt tables today.
Derived was originally engineered in-house to fulfill our requirements when we used to have a relatively smaller user base and a more manageable data volume. It played its part well during our earlier days, but our flexibility and observability requirements have substantially increased over time. Similarly, where we previously relied on software engineers to manage the system, the intent now is to foster greater self-service and maintain a more user-friendly design.
While Derived was instrumental in providing advanced features and setting a foundation of expectations for data transformation systems at Discord, it missed the mark in offering usability and flexibility. We had outgrown our system, which led us to the next iteration of our data transformation journey.
If you’d like to learn about Derived and how it worked, check out a previous blog post written here

Wow, a LOT of summer gaming news dropped recently since we last talked. Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo all had plenty of announcements, Summer Game Fest happened, and we even had some news of our own: using Discord voice chat on PS5 is WAY easier now.
We’ve pulled Matt, Alex, Emi, and Cody (hi) away from their beachside tanning sessions to tell us what they’ve been playing.
Somehow, Matt is NOT the one with the big list this month!
Uhhh.. it’s probably nothing I mentioned last month. Nine Sols carried over into June and I highly recommend it if you’re looking to scratch that Silksong-shaped itch. Other than that, I’m farming like crazy in Elden Ring to finally beat Mohg which gets me into the DLC club.
That Xbox & Bethesda Showcase felt like the most E3 moment in a long while. Excited for all of the content they shared but eagerly awaiting some dates. Especially Doom: The Dark Ages.
Now that Discord is easier than ever to use on PS5, similar to what we achieved with Xbox a couple of years ago, I exclusively take all my Discord work meetings on both consoles now. (To my manager: this is a joke. Mostly.)
