Wellbeing & Empowerment Principles

We believe digital spaces can be sources of connection, growth, and belonging for everyone on Discord. With Boston Children's Hospital's Digital Wellness Lab, we've established four principles that guide our mission across the breadth of our work.

Leverage friend-to-friend influence
Gaming Fosters Meaningful Connection
We recognize that gaming and online communities foster transferable life skills and meaningful social connection. We understand virtual interactions support mental wellbeing and healthy emotional regulation. We inform design for authentic relationship-building that recognizes different social preferences, while understanding gaming culture challenges and working with internal teams to address them.

Championing User Agency & Transparency
Through research, partnerships, and user voice, we inform policies, programs, and resources that respect user agency. We balance autonomy and safety, reflecting developmental needs and cultural contexts. We maintain transparent communication about our decisions and their impact, creating pathways for intergenerational understanding that support guardian-teen relationships.

Mental Health & Digital Wellness
We recognize mental health support and digital literacy as fundamental to thriving communities where users engage authentically and sustainably. We understand that gaming can serve as stress relief and emotional regulation, and that digital spaces can meaningfully support mental wellbeing and meaningful connections. We aim to increase access to mental health resources, providing users with concrete tools for managing wellbeing in online spaces.

Wellbeing by Design
We provide expert guidance on policies that support gaming and community experience while preserving positive dynamics. We prioritize solutions delivering tangible safety improvements with high user engagement, making conscious trade-offs that preserve what makes Discord special. We take a culturally competent approach, recognizing that wellbeing and empowerment differ across regions.

More Resources

“It is essential that families are empowered with knowledge, tools and resources so they can support healthy digital habits for their children. When platforms offer resources like Discord’s new Family Center, this information helps facilitate meaningful conversations between teens and their parents and caregivers about how to be safe, responsible and respectful online. National PTA will continue to work with our partners including Discord to create a healthier digital environment for teens and families.“

Yvonne Johnson
National PTA President

“Family Center provides parents with what they need to help guide their teen's use of Discord without being too invasive. It's like the physical world where you know who your kids are hanging out with and where they're going but not listening in on their conversations or micromanaging their relationships. Tools like Family Center can help parents help their teens develop the habits and critical thinking skills that apply not only to Discord but all of life.“
