Misleading started his Discord server as a place for his friends to come together when he started live streaming. Now, Misleading’s server is one of the largest Destiny 2 communities!
Fans often want more than a one-way content megaphone. Communities are living, breathing spaces, where people come to interact not only with creators, but other like-minded individuals.
“Discord is the homebase for growing a community rather than growing an audience. The difference is HUGE. Discord provides the easiest and best way to keep your community active EVERYWHERE. It gives your audience so much: a way to see all of your content on all platforms, a place to talk about it, and a direct line to you.”
In addition to being the place where he posts updates and links to his content first, Misleading taps into his Discord community during the creative process.
“I ask my Discord server members to participate in making content with me. It’s the most direct and easy way to interact with the bulk of people – they can engage with me, share ideas and figure out the latest info together. The value of being able to IMMEDIATELY show all of your community your new content or get their opinions on it is unmatched.”
As a creator using Server Subscriptions on Discord, Misleading’s advice for other creators is to learn what your community likes and then incorporate that into the benefits. In his case, it’s exclusivity and a little bit of flair.
“My community likes special roles with special icons, so I made 3 tiers to give people various cost options so they could get something special and stand out more! Make sure your subscribers have multiple exclusive channels and roles. All it takes is something special like an exclusive color to make people feel rewarded for their support.”
Getting Server Subscriptions activated quickly is easy to do, but Misleading thinks it’s important to be realistic about the kinds of benefits you can provide as rewards for each tier.
“Find a balance with your benefits. It’s almost always better to give a simple reward than one that might take up a lot of time. Instead of offering a one-on-one talk or hangout session, give them access to a channel where it's just you and the other Subscribers so they have an exclusive place to go.”
