How to Share What You’re Playing, Listening to, or Watching as Your Status on Discord

What do people do while they’re on Discord? Play video games. WILD, I know. Sometimes people also listen to music or even watch anime together. But how will people know you’re playing video games in the first place?
By showing it as your current status! Read on to learn how to show @everyone what PC or console games you’re playing, the music you’re listening to, or even which anime you’re watching. (And if you’d prefer not to share a particular game, we’ll also show you how to turn off certain sharing features.)
How to Show What PC Game You’re Playing on Discord
Back in the early days, Discord started as a way for people to easily play PC games together. (shoutout to the early FFXIV players who were checkin’ out Discord!) Because of that, it’s really easy to show off what PC, Mac, or Linux game you’re playing as your Discord status.
You can install and use the Discord desktop app to display any PC game (or application) you’re playing as your current status. And if you want a particular game displayed in your Discord status that isn't showing automatically, you can head into User Settings > Registered Games and click on the blue “Add it!” text to see a list of applications you currently have running.
You can also stop showing specific games from being shown as your status using the eyeball toggles on the right of the game’s name. Nothing to see here! 👁️
How to Show What Console Game You’re Playing on Discord
Even though we started out focused on PC gaming, Discord’s grown! You can also show off supported console games you’re playing as your Discord status.
You’ll just need to connect either a PlayStation or Xbox account to your Discord profile. You can find these options in User Settings > Connections!
Click on either the PlayStation or Xbox icons, then follow the steps to link your accounts together, aaaaand… that’s it! You’ll see some new options pop up for whichever profile you’ve linked, as shown below:
As long as you keep either “Display PlayStation Network as your status” or “Display Xbox as your status” toggled on, you’ll be able to show off what you’re playing automatically! Sharing the game you’re playing is supported when you’re playing on PlayStation®5, Xbox Series X|S, or Xbox One.
You can do MORE than just show off what you’re playing, you know… check out these other console-related blog posts and see how you can talk to your Discord friends directly from your console:
Technically, if you stream an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One game via Xbox Cloud Gaming, that game will also show as your Discord status! That includes your weird smart toaster that didn’t need internet capabilities in the first place.
How to Show What Music You’re Listening To on Discord
Ooohh, is that “Wumpus Chewing on a Leaf (5 Hour Mix)” off the new Idle Nights album I hear? What a deep cut. Now, how are others going to know how impeccable your taste in music is?
In addition to PC and console games, you can also show off what song you’re listening to on Spotify as your Discord status!
In the User Settings > Connections page, click on the Spotify logo to get your Discord and Spotify accounts synced up. After you do this, you’ll have a new option to “Display Spotify as your status,” just like the PlayStation and Xbox connection options!
The next time you’re using Discord and listening to something on Spotify on the same PC, Discord will show off whichever song you’re playing on Spotify.
How to Show What Anime You’re Watching on Discord
Did you know “Wumpus Chewing on a Leaf (5 Hour Mix)” was also the opening song to the recent Wumpus Wonderventures anime adaptation? The original comics were a bit better, but the series stands on its own pretty well.
Just like how you can show off the games and music you’re enjoyin’, you can also show off that anime you’re 300 episodes deep into automatically by linking a Crunchyroll account!
AND like the other connected accounts, all you have to do is head into User Settings > Connections and click on the Crunchyroll icon! Sign in to your account, link Crunchyroll to Discord, and THAT’S IT.
How to Stop Sharing What You’re Doing on Discord
Sometimes you wanna remain incognito. Mysterious. Make people try and figure out what you’re even playing as you post messages like “WOWOWOW,” “this game is crazy,” and set your status “brb playing the best game of my life.” (It’s Virtue’s Last Reward btw.) To stop showing off what you’re doing as your Discord status, head into User Settings > Activity Privacy and toggle off the “Share my activity” button. This will turn off automatically sharing what you’re doing as your status, including what games you’re playing on your PC or connected console, along with the music and anime you’re enjoying.
If you’d like to stop showing specific platforms as your status, head into User Settings > Connections and toggle whether or not you’re showing specific platforms as your status.
Now that everyone’s in the loop about what you’re doin’, there’s a good chance someone will reach out and ask if you wanna play a game together or talk about that anime you just watched!
The next time you’re hanging out in voice, Discord’s got plenty of ways to make vibin’ way easier. Game streaming? Crossplay voice chat? BOTH at once while on PC? We got you covered:
